Glass plaques and Crystal Plaques serve as an alternate to all of the other plaques as it adds an extremely high quality option to the mix. Glass plaques and crystal plaques can either stand upright on a desk or hang on a wall. Typically, the engraving is done by sandblasting which provides a deeper etch into the award.
Some awards suppliers feel that by simply laser engraving into the glass or crystal provides good enough marking into the award, while others go to the time and expense of creating a mask and sandblasting the award. Some examples of newer style of glass and crystal plaques are: Crescent shaped glass plaques. These awards are fabricated by starting with a rectangular piece of glass that has its edges beveled. The glass is then heated and systematically bent to create an arched piece of glass that is able to stand on its edge without tipping over. These plaques come in clear, jade green, or a smoked gray color.
Stand up crystal plaques. These awards are made out of crystal that is either clear or tinted a particular color (blue, amber, etc.). The crystal is etched and placed into a metal base so it is free-standing.
Glass plaques with a rosewood or black plaque board: These plaques feature a rectangular piece of glass that is etched in reverse from the backside. The corners have mounting holes so that a spacer can be placed between the glass and the plaque. There is usually about 1 inch of space that adds a 3-dimensional appearance to the award.
Due to the time consuming nature of etching into glass and crystal, these plaques are usually a bit more expensive than the traditional wall plaque. The end result, though, is very noticeable and worth while if the cost fits within the buyer's budget.
